Week 14 Spring 2024

This week we will be firing the wood kiln! This is an atmospheric reduction firing that utilizes the flame and heat of burning wood to reach temp and create reduction. I have a few pots in the wood kiln that I have glazed with a crystalline glaze to see if they will form in a solely reduction atmosphere. I am excited to have my large triangle vase as well as several smaller bowls ready to go into the kiln.

This is an image of the wood kiln as it is half loaded, more shelves were stacked in front of these shelves in a similar fashion to finish filling the kiln.

This was taken during the firing. These coals were pulled out of the bottom of the fire to make room for more wood to be put in the fire box to continue raising the temp.

These two images were taken through the peep holes of the kiln at almost top temp before we started down firing the kiln. In the top image cone 9 is fully down and cone 10 is falling, in the bottom image cone 9 and 10 are fully down and cone 11 is almost fully over.

We down fired the kiln to try and achieve crystal growth so we will see next week what developed!

This week was also the ring ceremony where I received my class ring along with some of my studio mates!

See you next week for updates on the firing!!
