Post 3 Fall 2024

Hey yall!! I have made a lot of progress this week making prototypes to see how bisque and glaze firing will go with these objects. I have made 3 different styles of corset, one waistband, one chest piece, and one corset that will be strung together by holes in the structure.

These pieces will give me information as to whether or not the body form I have created will effectively aid me in sizing the corsets allowing for the shrinkage rate in the porcelain.

It will also help me figure out if the slab size I have chosen is thick enough to resist cracking when fired. I am in the process of bisquing work as I write this. I have added some of my classmate's work to help fill the kiln as I want to see how these pieces will hold up through firing before continuing production.

In the meantime, I will begin to create small pieces that will be used as adornments for the corsets and the wearer. Bracelets, neckpieces, hand jewelry, earrings, and other pieces will adorn the figure. I take an interest in the idea behind adornment and what the meaning of it is. A well-dressed woman can have a heightened status in an office while also having a lowered status on a construction site. I am interested in how the way I adorn myself plays a part in the status I am given, either by physical or mental merit. I will continue to update my progress weekly on this site and welcome any advice or insight you may have into these topics!

See yall next week!
