Post 1 Fall 2024

Hey guys welcome back to my last semester! I am excited to be pursuing an idea I have been thinking about all summer for my senior show and hope to give you all as wonderful of an experience as I have had creating it. Over the summer I have done a lot of research concerning my personal history and present and how I can relate that to the art I am making. I spent some time re-reading my artist statement from last semester and it gave me some insight as to how I arrived at this train of thought.

"As a Louisiana native the Cajun culture has greatly shaped my artistic journey, and my artwork is an exploration of the vibrant and diverse traditions that define it. I use crystalline glaze and its unpredictable yet serene outcomes to hold a conversation between the real and perceived. In doing this I am holding a candle to the lost intricacies of a culture mostly known by stereotype. The tactile and inherently social nature of clay allows me to translate the warmth and authenticity of my upbringing into tangible forms meant to be used and enjoyed by the many rather than the few. I create each piece with a reverence for the craftsmanship of the artisans and laborers who have come before me. These elements of my identity help me find expression in the textures, colors, and forms of my ceramic pieces. My hope is that, in experiencing my artworks, others may feel rhythm reminiscent of a Cajun two-step and sense camaraderie such that defines the heart and soul of Louisiana's Cajun heritage."

I was trying to pursue a concept that was in conversation with my heritage while not straying to far from my personal experience. I came to the conclusion that to do this i needed to take a more contemporary approach. Corsetry is something I have been interested from a textile standpoint for a large part of my life as my grandmother taught me how to sew. Pulling from this experience I have found a way to connect a part of my past to my present experience in ceramics. I have set up my studio this week and plan to spend a lot of time here creating this vision over the course of this semester. I am excited to have you all along for the ride and cant wait to see how it ends up!

See yall next week. :)
